For authors: strategies to revolutionize our writing
As Christian authors, we have an obligation to present the Truth in a unique and compelling way. I'm compiling strategies to empower our writing. I'll keep posting as time goes on.
Write to the senses
Each time you write a scene, try to use at least three of the senses. What's your character seeing/hearing/feeling/tasting? Can we use the senses in a different way than normal? For example, have your character taste fear. What does it taste like?
Stress then describe!
In know that sounds strange but it's really quite effective. Description can be tedious for some readers so its best to have something exciting, stressful or otherwise emotionally engaging occurring and then introduce the character's past or physical bearing.
For example, I once read part of a novel in which the protagonist has just released an arrow which is intended to kill another character. The author then went on to provide a rather lengthy introduction to the protagonist's background but the key factor that held my attention was wanting to know if the other fellow (poor guy) had indeed been killed.
You might use another stressor (maybe a hurtful sentence or an attempted rescue) to hold your reader's attention. But stress can be good.
